Riga Airport Reaches a New Cargo Handling Record

riga airport2In October 2013, Riga International Airport reached a new cargo handling record – 7809 tonnes, or 215 per cent up year on year, and 290 tonnes more than in April 2012 when for the first time in its history the airport attained an unprecedented record – 7519 tonnes. It should be noted that the biggest part of the cargo handled at the airport (~ 70%) are cargo shipments to the international forces in Afghanistan, which shows Latvia’s important role as a reliable partner.

Aldis Mūrnieks, Chairman of the Board of Riga International Airport, said: „We are pleased to be able to efficiently handle the cargo flow at Riga Airport, which is an opportunity to present ourselves in the international market as an attractive cargo services provider.”

In the ten months of 2013 the amount of handled cargo was 46 995 tonnes, or 69.6% more than in the same period last year, and the number of passengers serviced reached 4 134 781 or 0.5% more year on year (4 114 713 passengers).

Riga International Airport is the leading airport in the Baltic states. In the winter season Riga Airport will offer flights to 70 direct destinations operated by the following airlines: airBaltic, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Aeroflot, Lufthansa, Norwegian, Finnair, Uzbekistan Airways, LOT, UTair, Transaero, Belavia, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines Group, Turkmenistan Airlines, Polet Airlines, Corendon, SmartLynx, and Metrojet.
