Today, living in the era, when new technologies are being developed every single day the concept of “modern” accelerates. With every new development, things that yesterday were modern, suddenly becomes archaic? And what about aviation and aviation training? How do we to keep up with the modernity? Or maybe, the right question would be: what actually is the modern training?
After the past year tragedies in the sky caused by loss of control in flight, the pointing finger moves to the pilot training. With the evolving aircraft control systems which become more and more automatic suddenly appears that aviation training becomes outdated. However there are still no official regulations for modernization of training.
So once again, what does the modern training means? When we say modern, the first thing that comes to our mind is technology. New update technology tools used for pilot training. And yes from the first sight it might look like it. Using electronic mockups instead of paper ones or tablets for your CBT. But can you actually admit that this already would be a modern training?
Yes, such tools will definitely help you to absorb the information more easily and faster. However will that help you gain valuable knowledge, how to handle your modern aircraft in case of emergency, when all the automatic systems will fail, and only human will stand by? Probably not. This is why in the era of modern technology our answer is modern human, or if to be exact – a modern instructor.
Modern instructor:
The one who is currently flying. There is no greater experience than the real one. If your instructor is still flying with an airline he will have and will be able to share with you the most recent situations that he experienced. Whether it is aircraft handling or CRM situations – your instructor may be able to teach you things that you won’t learn from any book or find on any modern device.
The one who has hours of experience. Once again it depends, whether your instructor has thousands of flying hours, or just enough to become an instructor. Modern instructor with little flying experience – how is that even possible?
The one who is focused on CRM. Crew Resource Management is one of the most important subjects not only in pilot training but in real piloting too. Pilots must learn how to handle a crew in most difficult situations without losing control of each other and aircraft as well. Modern instructor will draw your attention to CRM in every step of the training, because he will understand the importance.
The one who cares to teach. There is no doubt that in order to be an instructor you have to gain certain qualification. However, is that all that your instructor did? Or maybe he took additional seminars, or classes to improve as a teacher. Also how much he is interested in the absorption of the information that he provides for students? Maybe he will take you to full flight simulator if he sees the chance to do that. Or give additional explanations about the topic that you can’t easily get elsewhere?
What can you do?
So you already set to gain the most modern training that you can get. How to do that? When you are choosing training centre to start learning do not forget to ask some questions:
The responsible training centre will always take care of training quality that they provide. In other words, they also will do their best to hire only the modern instructors. Do not be afraid to ask about the experience of the instructors in their centre, how they choose them, and on what criteria it is based on?
What training tools they use, and what is the approach for training? Even if a certain training centre does not have for example electronic mockups, that doesn’t mean that they do not have options. Fixed Based Training in this case is an even better solution, since you start your theoretical training already in a full flight simulator.
Check what other training courses training centre provides. Such courses as Crew Resource Management, Jet Orientation Course or development of MPL shows that training centre is set in modern direction trying to prepare pilots for the job at an airline.
Does your training centre work along with partner airlines? This shows that training centre has an updated approach to the pilot training and understands the needs of airlines, therefore most likely the standards for both pilot training and instructors will be developed under the certain consideration.
