Sheremetyevo Presents its Development Project for the North Terminal Complex

Sheremetyevo Airport is participating in the NAIS&CA Forum. On February 10, Evgeny Tumel, Deputy General Director, Chief Engineer of Sheremetyevo Airport, delivered a report at the Forum.

E. Tumel spoke in his report, entitled “Integrated solutions for infrastructure development of the big hub using JSC Sheremetyevo International Airport,” about the Sheremetyevo North Terminal Complex project.

The development project for the North Terminal Complex at Sheremetyevo Airport represents a large-scale and unique project for Russian civil aviation” said E. Tumel.

Development of the North Terminal Complex with a capacity of 40 mln passengers per year is one of the strategic activity areas of Sheremetyevo Airport and is set out in the Master Plan of the Airport till 2030. Phase one of the new complex is designed for 15 mln passengers per year (airport terminal area will amount to 100,000 m2). The underground tunnel exit that will connect the southern and northern airport areas is also designed for this sector. Underground tunnel and new Terminal B completion is being planned, together with Airport runway-3 completion and commissioning. The tunnels, each 2138 m long, will join the northern and southern airport areas. The underground terminal-to-terminal tunnels under active runways will be built in Russia for the first time. It will create new conditions for Sheremetyevo development as a major hub and will raise Moscow’s transit, tourist and business potential.

The projects shall be implemented before the FIFA World Cup scheduled to take place in Russia in 2018.

Construction of the new terminal in the northern area of Sheremetyevo will provide for an increase in passenger traffic to 53 mln people by 2023 while retaining a high level of service quality. It will create optimal conditions for long-term development and meeting the goals of strategic partner JSC Aeroflot-RA, and will also allow Sheremetyevo to continue working as an international hub.

The terminal-to-terminal underpass (tunnel) will connect the North and South Terminal Complexes and eliminate restrictions on Sheremetyevo Airport development. Passengers and baggage, including those in transit, will be transported through this tunnel. The tunnel can redistribute passenger flows between the North Terminal Complex and South Terminal Complex, which will dramatically increase the free capacity utilization of Terminal C, occupancy of the new Terminal B and of the whole NTC. It will also lead to the terminals’ equal utilization, thereby improving the quality of carrier and passenger servicing.

Creation of the terminal-to-terminal connection will give Sheremetyevo new opportunities for transfer passenger service. Tunnel capacity will make it possible to serve the whole transfer passenger flow between the South and North Terminal Complexes. Opening of the terminal-to-terminal passenger service will provide the minimum connection time, greatly increase passenger transfer speed between the terminals; the baggage tunnel will decrease baggage transportation time between the terminals and provide the opportunity to create a single integrated baggage system. Transportation improvement between the terminals will make the airport more attractive for carriers and passengers.
