In a context of rapidly developing and improving world, it is not a surprise that over the years air travel has changed vastly. Starting from an online ticket purchase and ending with a modern experimentation with aircraft without pilots. But what exact changes have occurred inside the airplane? Most of us did not even have a chance to try out the vintage style of air travel. So let’s look to top 10 things which are no longer seen on the aircraft and experience it!
1. Sleeping berths
Formerly, not only the first class passengers had an opportunity to sleep comfortably while flying. In the bigger liners every seat in the main cabin could be formed to sleeping berths. Could it be better?
2. Elbow-room in Economy class
Nowadays we are used to be squeezed if we are traveling in economy class. But back then, it was enough free space there to feel comfortable and do not be hit by a neighbor’s elbow.
3. Restaurant food
And it is not only about the food taste and quality, but rather more about the service! Passengers were more accustomed to enjoy fancy meals served by a real chef on-board.
In-flight entertainment has changed a lot as well. People used to prefer group activities such as board games or group cinema screenings. Today, our entertainment is based more on individual activities: larger aircraft have individual seatback screens for the personal needs and taste.
5. In-flight smoking
Not so long ago it was allowed to smoke on the airplanes. There was a special section for smokers where the seats were with the little ashtrays. You may still remember that!
6. Flowers on-board
Believe it or not, but some of the airlines decorated first class tray tables with fresh flower arrangements. For example, Pan Am’s 707 Clipper was presented as vibration-free, therefore, vases with flowers could stay still during turbulence. A great marketing trick!
7. Piano
In early 70’s American Airlines provided a special piano lounge. All music enthusiasts could gather and relax while listening to a live music on-board. Piano is quite a large thing to place inside the airplane cabin – it requires enough space, so it is a pity, but we could not enjoy such a thing nowadays.
8. Group lounges
Back then it was popular to have group chats and entertainments while flying. In first class there were group lounges where you could spend some quality time with your travel pals. Today it is all about having your personal space with all the conveniences.
9. Cocktail service
What we have now is a can of soft drink or a glass of liquor. But earlier on flights attendants were able to mix your favorite cocktail straight on-board!
10. Flight attendants with shorts
Let’s say that flight attendants never change – they are always kind, pretty and hot. But their uniforms do. Is it possible to see a flight attendant in mini shorts nowadays? We would hardly doubt that.
While some of these changes make us wish they never went out of style, yet others, we could say, are gone for the better. So let’s not be too nostalgic or skeptical and let’s be more excited about the new ones to come!
