Airlines, airports, air traffic control, regulators and other key air transport players must work more closely together to ensure the sector delivers a more enjoyable passenger experience while also protecting industry profitability and meeting stricter environmental regulations.
For example, helping passengers to find the quickest route to the airport and integrating the check-in, baggage handling, security and boarding of the aircraft could improve the overall customer experience and reduce carbon emissions.
Experts also discussed the potential for automation.
The technology for pilotless aircraft already exists, however the aviation experts agreed passengers would be unlikely to accept the idea. Therefore, despite increasing automation, airfield visual guidance will remain crucial to support pilots in all eventualities. Airfield lighting will also increasingly supplement other systems to help aircraft take-off and land safely as ground-based navigation from ATC reduces.
These were just some of the key findings of a global survey of leading experts conducted by ADB Airfield Solutions to investigate future trends in aviation.
“As a leader in airfield solutions we need to constantly question the current situation, talk to leaders, end users and key parties to understand their needs. We wanted to find out what they thought about the coming trends in airfield and travel and it is through this kind of dialogue that we will gain the insight we need to steer our product portfolio development and move ahead as a leader in the sector”, says Christian Onselaere, CEO of ADB Airfield Solutions.
The outlook of the survey extended beyond environmental impact and addressed topics ranging from airfield visual aids to the overall development, management and impact of airports as they evolve; to airfield safety and the role of pilots and ATC.
