Budapest Airport Hands Over Wizz Air’s Brand New Hangar
In a move recognising a significant strengthening of the presence of Wizz Air, Budapest Airport has officially opened a brand-new maintenance hangar built exclusively for its home-based carrier, in a ceremony celebrating the completion of the works and sealing a 15 year lease agreement during which Jost Lammers, CEO Budapest Airport, officially handed the new facility over to Wizz Air CEO, József Váradi in the presence of the Hungarian Transport Minister Dr. Miklós Seszták.
Built between the existing aircraft maintenance hangars operated by Lufthansa Technik and Aeroplex, the new 2,000m² hangar will considerably support Wizz Air’s growth at the Hungarian capital. Serving the daily needs of the carrier’s fast-growing fleet of nine Airbus A320s based aircraft at Budapest, the facility has also been designed and constructed to also accommodate the larger A321s which are due to join the Wizz Air fleet from 2019 onwards.
Confirming its tenth aircraft will be based at Budapest Airport from S16, Wizz Air also announced a number of new routes and frequency increases made possible by the addition. Specifically the extra aircraft will accommodate the planned increases on the London Luton service, from four to five daily, as well as an expected weekly increase to Gothenburg. While commencing the already-announced W15 new routes to Tenerife South and Birmingham, the carrier has now also confirmed the launch of a twice-weekly service to Nice, as well as a new route to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, both due to start this winter. In total Wizz Air will have a total of 45 routes to 20 countries, with the new hangar providing the security of smooth operation and high quality services.
