Gulfstream Volunteer Project Assists Local Nonprofit

FenceIMG_0243-thumbAn equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) program facility in Effingham County received a makeover last weekend, thanks to an infusion of more than 1,000 volunteer hours from Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. employees and a host of community partners.

The 150 volunteers transformed the property of Faith Equestrian Therapeutic Center, a five-acre farm in Guyton that has helped hundreds of children and adults with physical, mental and emotional challenges through its EAAT program, which includes assisted riding, educational and mental health therapies.

“It’s an impressive and wonderful thing to get this kind of support from Gulfstream and others in the community,” said Bonnie Rachael, Faith Equestrian’s founder and CEO. “We would never have been able to raise the kind of money it takes to make these improvements. We are very grateful.”

Gulfstream volunteers installed and painted a 1,700-foot-long wooden fence on the property. They also renovated Faith Equestrian’s 2,100-square-foot education center with paint, polish, wainscoting, new furniture and appliances, added thousands of pounds of dirt and sand to the facility’s sensory integration trail and horse arena, and painted and repaired anything that needed it, including the barn, playground and observatory station.

Volunteers from other local companies, including ABM Industries, Old Town Construction Services, Sodexo, Vos Electric, Stage Front Presentation Systems, Dampier Construction and Bryan Mechanical Inc., contributed to the project by donating labor, materials, furniture and food to feed the volunteers. Most importantly, a 6-foot-wide by 700-foot-long sidewalk was installed, providing a wheelchair-friendly path from the parking lot to the stables.

The volunteer event, part of Gulfstream’s ongoing community outreach efforts, was coordinated and completed by Gulfstream’s Product Support organization, which last year elected to perform a community service project instead of receiving year-end employee appreciation gifts. Last December, Gulfstream volunteers built a nearly 22,000-square-foot playground for the students at Kicklighter Resource Center, a Savannah nonprofit that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities.

“This volunteer project is a wonderful way to help a nonprofit that is improving the lives of children and adults in our area,” said Tim Steinhauser, director, Customer Relations, Gulfstream. “We are very proud to be associated with this and are thankful for the response from other businesses in the area. We hope many more people will get to experience EAAT at Faith Equestrian Therapeutic Center.”

Gulfstream worked with the United Way of the Coastal Empire and HandsOn Savannah to choose Faith Equestrian as the recipient of the Gulfstream-sponsored effort.

“The contributions by Gulfstream and others will allow us to use fundraising money for more scholarships for low or no-income families in need of our services instead of having to budget facility improvements,” said Rachael, a former mounted police officer in Savannah. “These enhancements to our center will also get us much closer to our goal of getting accredited by PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). The accreditation will help ensure our future as a professional organization people can trust to send their loved ones to for help.”
