Lithuanian Airports Record Growth in Q1 of 2016
During the first quarter of the year Lithuanian airports handled 17% more passengers compared to the same period last year. In January, February and March 914,000 passengers travelled through Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports. The passenger traffic showed a nearly identical growth in all three Lithuanian airports.
Vilnius Airport remains the leader of Lithuanian airports – like last year, it services 80% of the whole passenger traffic. Compared to the first quarter last year, the number of travellers in the Lithuanian capital increased 17%, reaching 729,000 in three months.
The largest – 18% – growth in the passenger number was recorded at Kaunas Airport – during the first quarter of 2015 the airport handled nearly 152,000 people. Kaunas also saw an increase in flights – 14% more compared to the same period last year.
Passenger traffic rose to 32,500 at Palanga Airport, i.e. a 17% year-on-year growth, with a 4% rise in the number of flights.
“The growth in passenger traffic in all three airports is a confirmation that our strategic direction – a single policy of development of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga air gateways – is pursued successfully. The passenger growth means more arriving tourists, more jobs to service them and more positive feedback on our country abroad. The start of the new season at the end of March also brought new routes and we are hoping that the half-year statistics will also reveal praiseworthy results,” said Jūratė Baltrušaitytė, Commercial Director at Lithuanian Airports.
This year Lithuanian airports have a lot of news to share – flights to Birmingham were launched in Vilnius; air connections with London, Stockholm, Tallinn and Antalya were improved as well. New flights to Bari and Reykjavik are expected this autumn. Wizz Air also commenced its operations at Kaunas Airport – the airline operates to London and will fly to Eindhoven, Ålesund, Bergen and Stavanger in autumn. At the end of March as many as three carriers commenced flights in Palanga – Wizz Air and Ryanair operate to London; LOT flies to Warsaw.
More news is yet to come in June – Germania, which will revive flights between the capital of Lithuania and Zürich, and Vueling, which will improve air connections with Barcelona, will commence operations in Vilnius, while Belavia will launch flights to Minsk from Palanga.
During the first quarter of 2016 Lithuanian airports handled nearly 11,000 flights. During the summer season 19 airlines operate flights to 65 destinations in 54 cities and 26 countries in Europe and beyond it from Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports.
