Riga International Airport is now one step closer to sustainable business practices as it has purchased four new electric baggage tractors with the view to protecting the environment and the health of airport personnel. The new baggage tugs will replace the tractors with diesel engines.
The electric baggage tugs daily transport the baggage of Riga Airport passengers between the aircraft and the terminal. This year, Riga Airport plans to buy three more electric tugs to replace the outdated technical equipment.
One baggage tug on average transports more than 500 bags per day. In total, there are 12 electric baggage tractors currently working at the airport.
It should be added that the purchase of the electric baggage tugs will contribute to reduction of CO2 in the airport, which is an important condition for the airport to ascend to the next level in its Carbon Accreditation Programme.
Last year, in December Riga International Airport received the Airport Carbon Accreditation Certificate of compliance with 1st level requirements for reduction of greenhouse emissions. By receiving the certificate, Riga Airport has joined the global community of airports that are active in reduction of greenhouse emissions.
Currently, 151 airports worldwide participate in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme and 104 of those airports are European.
Riga International Airport is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltic countries. In the winter season, Riga Airport offers flights to 69 destinations, operated by 21 airlines.
